Safety First
Often, carrying out the repair is easier than you might think. Many products are built on a modular basis and the repair of the overall item simply involves part replacement.
However, don’t undertake repair in the following cases:
- Your product is still in warranty – contact the retailer or manufacturer directly.
- It is safety-critical e.g. a car’s ABS system, or requires accredited tradespeople to work on e.g. CORGI for gas boilers, or contains controlled substances e.g. fridges and freezers.
- You are not confident that you are capable of carrying out the work in a safe and effective manner, or don’t know someone who can.
- You cannot uniquely identify the required part numbers by manufacturer, model, id or serial number.
- There are no appropriate fixtures and fittings that allow disassembly and reassembly without loss of integrity or safety. (Complete part replacement may be the easiest, cheapest and safest option.)
