What are metrics?
Metrics is a posh word for measurements or, more accurately, the system of measurements and their interpretation.
What do they mean to us?
At heart, we are interested in the money, materials and energy that can be saved by reusing products rather than either throwing them away or at best recycling them.
Why is this important?
There are a number of reasons:
- We need to understand benefits of reuse to interest purchasers and potential remanufacturers.
- Government doesn’t measure reuse or its benefits so won’t take action to help if there isn’t any “evidence”.
- We are all starting to do our bit by recycling, for example, but we need to be clear where we can do better and where we could put our efforts most quickly and easily.
The area of measurement is a complicated area. There are lots of organisations who are doing analysis all with their own approach and giving a range of answers to the same question. Unfortunately, they all usually take a very long time! Our approach is much more rough and ready but were pretty sure of these things:
- It’s right to focus on energy, which is the major environmental concern of our time.
- We draw the “box” – what’s included and what’s not – in the right place, so the comparisons are fair.
- We use openly available base data – EcoInvent.
- Our results are not precise, but they’re good enough to point you in the right direction amongst the various options.
