The Waste Hierarchy

Recover Energy

In the old days this was called incineration. But in those days there weren’t many controls on the emissions and the heat was wasted.

Rest assured that, these days, facilities are very tightly controlled (and thank the EU for that) and are unlikely to be built unless they can recover the energy for uses such as:

Increasingly, waste management companies are taking our domestic waste and, after removing the recyclable components and inert materials, turning the residual waste into fuel. This Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) is sold as pellets to be used in coal-fired power stations.

This new generation of waste processing uses various combinations of Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT). Biological treatments can also include Anaerobic Digestion (AD) which is particularly effective at converting food wastes into a fuel gas that can then be burnt to provide power. Because it’s derived from bio materials, this power is also considered to be “green”.

There is a lot more about these topics on the web.
