Brevini UK, reported in "Engineering capacity" magazine, say that a proactive preventative maintenance strategy is key to maximising availability and minimising downtime for power transmission systems. An effective preventative maintenance strategy will have a regular inspection regime, which is detailed enough to identify potential problems, for example, including vibration analysis, thermal imaging and lubricating oil analysis. Inspection alone is not enough, the action plan recommended as a result is crucial to avoiding unexpected failure which parts should be repaired, refurbished or replaced, and when. Regular inspection is particularly important for equipment that is difficult to maintain due to ease of access or scale as scheduling maintenance in planned downtime is much less disruptive than unexpected failure.
