There is potential for the existing market for second hand furniture to grow significantly if remanufacturing is "designed in" to new products, and consumer perception that products which use old parts are somehow inferior is overcome.
Changing work patterns are driving the demand for reconfigurable office furniture solutions and more modern designs. Designers can implement strategies into this new generation of products to enable easy disassembly and reuse of components at their end of life.
Social enterprises currently reclaim old office furniture for use, when refurbished, by voluntary organisations and SMEs, and could work alongside manufacturers to provide a reclamation service. Green procurement policies may also help to expand the remanufactured goods market.
