What is the ECA scheme?

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme is designed to encourage companies to purchase top performing energy products. ECAs are available for a certified list of equipment, the purchase of which can be written off 100% against tax in the first year.

ECA & Remanufacture

Our provisional talks with Treasury suggest that remanufactured goods, the use of which prevents a substantial investment of energy and materials, would be an useful addition to the scheme. We are now working on a short list of qualifying equipment and estimating the costs and benefits of putting them on the scheme.

Buy ECA-approved Goods

At this moment, remanufactured products are NOT on the list, but you can still use the scheme to buy approved energy- and water-efficient equipment. Find out more at the ECA website. There is another ECA site, which is slightly more human that deals specifically with water-saving technologies, but also deals with buying and claiming. You have to register to get to some bits.

Here is an overview list taken from the ECA site. Be aware that this is routinely updated so visit the site for latest information.

The technologies on the Energy Technology Criteria List represent the key areas of business investment in plant and machinery for which there are energy-saving and environmentally beneficial solutions. The fourteen technologies which qualify for ECAs are:

  • Air-to-air energy recovery
  • Automatic monitoring and targeting (AMT)
  • Boiler equipment
  • Combined heat and power (CHP)
  • Compact heat exchangers
  • Compressed air equipment
  • Warm air and radiant heaters
  • Heat pumps for space heating
  • Heating ventilation and air conditioning zone controls
  • Lighting
  • Motors and drives
  • Pipework insulation
  • Refrigeration equipment
  • Solar thermal systems

The technologies on the Water Technology Criteria List are:

  • Cleaning in place equipment
  • Efficient showers
  • Efficient taps
  • Efficient toilets
  • Efficient washing machines
  • Flow controllers
  • Leakage detection equipment
  • Meters and monitoring equipment
  • Rainwater harvesting equipment
  • Small scale slurry and sludge dewatering equipment
  • Vehicle wash water reclaim units
  • Water efficient industrial cleaning equipment
  • Water management equipment for mechanical seals
  • Efficient membrane filtration systems
