Remanufacturing Design Standards: BS 8887

Recently British Standards published BS 8887: design for Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly and End of life (MADE) this sets out instructions on the whole life cycle design process for a product. This standard was originally published in 2006 with an above expected take-up by industry. Although covering disassembly and end of life, the original drafting committee expertise was leaned towards design for manufacturing and assembly and was therefore less comprehensive in its coverage of disassembly and end of life. A new committee has been formed specifically to strengthen the ā€œD and Eā€ section. We are incorporating design for remanufacture into this standard. This will have two effects on manufacturers subscribing to the standard:

The initial aim has been to develop a robust definition for end of life processes including remanufacturing. The next stage is then to enable designers to correctly identify the most effective end of life option for their product.

Future Work

Long term contribution to the standards committee is required to develop the remanufacturing section of the MADE standard. This will provide the definition and frames work from which other standards can be developed. We will combine the work with the SMMT and look at developing a remanufacturing standard for automotive components. The standard is likely to be different from the MADE standard by focusing on the act of remanufacturing.
